Pure sodium sulfide anhydrate is white cubic crystal or granule. It has strong hygroscopicity and is easily discolored and unstable in the air. The relative density is 1.856 (14℃) and the melting point is 1180℃. It is soluble in water (solubility is 15.4g/100ml water at 10℃, solubility is 57.2g/100ml water at 90℃), and the solution is alkaline. Slightly soluble in alcohol, insoluble in ether. Water solute is strongly alkaline, causing burns when it touches skin and hair, so it is also called Sulphur sulfide. Soluble in sulfur to form sodium polysulfide. Sodium sulfide is easily oxidized in the air to form sodium thiosulfate. Sodium sulfide deliquesces in the air and deteriorates by carbonation. Industrial sodium sulfide contains pink, brownish red, and khaki blocks due to impurities. Its specific gravity, melting point, and boiling point also vary depending on the influence of impurities.
